Washington Monument

This is the Washington Monument from a distance.

This is me by the Washington Monument Visitors Center.

The Washington Monument was built on July 4, 1827. The monument was ruined in the next fifty years. They decided to restore it. Ten years afterward, a crack appeared in the wall of the monument.It wasn't fixed, so the monument again was ruined. It was fixed later. The monument is a pretty grayish-brown color. The Washington Monument is a pretty monument meant in remembrance of George Washington. You can see a beautiful view from up there. There are steep grey stairs (fortunately there is a railing) inside the monument. The Washington Monument, Boonsboro, MD, is a beautiful place!

Appalachian Trail

This is a shelter where hikers sleep and eat on the Appalachian Trail.

This is a map of Maryland's portion of the Appalachian Trail.

This is a blaze, a white mark to mark the Appalachian Trail. Two marks means

a turn is near in the trail. Maintained side trails are represented with a blue blaze.

The Appalachian Trail is a trail from Maine to Georgia. It would take a long time to walk this trail. It is an enjoyed trail by many people. They have blazes (white paint marks) to mark the trail on posts, rocks, and trees. There are shelters to camp in, too. There are six shelters in Maryland, about 4 to 8 miles apart.

Horses, bikes, and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail. 

Crystal Grottoes

This is a formation in the shape of a king sitting down on his throne.

This is me in Crystal Grottoes.

Crystal Grottoes was first seen in September 18, 1920 when some people were trying to make the first paved road in the USA. They put a dynamite underground to help them. The dynamite did many crazy things. One thing they discovered was Crystal Grottoes. Grottoes means Caverns. This happened in Boonsboro. Spelunkers are people who worked with the grottoes. The important thing about the Grottoes is that it's a beautiful creation of our God. Crystal Grottoes is in Boonsboro,Washington county, MD.

They will NOT let you touch the formations, or they won't grow. 

Washington County Airport

The Washington County Regional Airport is a nice airport about 4 miles from Hagerstown. The airport gives thirty-one or more flights every day to and from different airports. It conducts flights to and from the BWI (Baltimore-Washington International Airport). In September,1991, the Airport revealed and dedicated a new passenger terminal that was built for $6,000,000! The importance of the airport is that it's a local airport that many people use to fly out from. This is the Hagerstown Regional Airport, Washington County, MD.

YMCA

This is the YMCA sign.

The YMCA is a building with a pool and an exercise room and maybe more. This is a favorite place for a lot of people. The reason it's important is that it's an exercise place, fun and helpful all at once. The old YMCA was built in 1921. The new was built in 2001.It's a very nice looking building in Washington County, MD!

Children's Village

Children's Village is located  at 1546 Mt. Aetna Road in Hagerstown. Children's Village is a place teaching children about safety. There are a couple of fun things for children, including little mini cars you ride on a little road. Usually when Children's Village is open, many people are there.

On April 15 & 16, I went to Children's Village for a Field Trip. The first day, we learned about fire safety, and how to check the doors with the back of your hand, the cracks, the knob, and then you peek through to see if it's safe. The second day, we learned about police safety. We learned about policemen and what tools they have. We rode little mini cars around the square. I used a bigger red car, because I was taller. I went on this Field Trip with the 2nd graders because I missed it last year. My partner for the two days was Jillian. She is very nice and funny. 

Children's Village is not a real village. Cars (real ones) are not allowed on the roads inside Children's Village, Washington County, MD.

Sideling Hill

This is a photo of Sideling Hill..Sideling Hill was once a big mountain but was cut through to make a road.

Sideling Hill was a big mountain, but then people cut it to make a road. Now it looks as if there were two Sideling Hills! This happened in 1985. These days, the road is named Interstate 68.The cut road is about three miles from the former road. The Old Highway is now called Scenic 40.The new highway has very scenic views, including a dramatic syncline, for instance. When they cut Sideling Hill, they found something very important. They found interesting fossils of sea life left from Noah's flood thousands of years ago!
