I am doing a project in school called the Washington County project. My goal is to write as much information about each of the following places in Washington County: Washington County airport, Children's Village, WCRH, YMCA, Washington Monument, Appalachian Trail.C&O Canal, Sideling Hill, Crystal Grottoes, and Wilson's Store and Wilson's School. This is Outside Hagerstown. We are doing this project to learn about Washington County. Goodbye!

The C&O Canal

This turning pond is a part of the C&O Canal.

This is the C&O Canal building. Inside, there is a person at a desk, some stairs (not required for you to go up) a brown antique desk, and a couch and TV, which shows information about the C&O.

This is one of the old rooms in the building.

These are some old black-and-white photos of the canal.

This is a closer up picture of one of the pictures.

This is the brown antique desk.

This is a map showing some of where the canal was. The blue streak is the canal.

This is information about Williamsport.

This is a board with some facts about the C&O Canal Aqueduct.

This is a pretty picture of the part of the C&O Canal I saw.

This is another picture of the geese.

Those are the geese. That one at the left might be eating.

This is the Towpath used for the mules and horses pulling boats on the canal.

This railroad trestle helped trains go over the C&O Canal.

This is the bridge again.

This is a picture of a pretty bridge.

The C&O Canal is a canal built in years by many men. Until 1924, many people would live by the banks of the canal. From 1828 to 1850, thousands of immigrants began to find work building the canal. One person who helped the canal was Justice Williams O. Douglas along with other worried Americans. He convinced the federal government to protect the canal. In 1971 Congress established the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. These days, you can enjoy what Justice Douglas called "a refuge, a place of retreat, a long stretch of quiet and peace."
